What cloud providers typically do
With many providers the page lives on their servers. You edit online; the URL points to their domain or a subdomain. Analytics or themes are often behind subscriptions.
That is convenient if you want zero hosting. Downside: lock-in, account requirement, and limited portability if you switch providers.
What the HTML file changes
MakeALink delivers a file you can serve anywhere: your web space, static hosting, an existing site. You keep the file and can version or back it up.
There is no mandatory subscription for core features. Donations are optional and do not change the feature set.
When cloud still makes sense
If you never want to upload and need a hosted URL immediately, classic cloud tools stay practical. MakeALink targets the other need: control and independence.
You can combine both: draft in MakeALink, host with a provider you choose – without MakeALink storing the live page.
Practical checklist before switching
List your key links. Note designs. Download the HTML file and images. Test the URL on a phone. Update bio links in social apps to the new address.
Legal pages (imprint, privacy) belong to the website that serves the link page – not as MakeALink user content inside the tool.
